Primitivo: Zinfandel’s Italian Cousin
Genetically, Zinfandel and Primitivo are extremely similar—it took some DNA fingerprinting to figure it out—but Primitivo and Zinfandel are actually both clones of an ancient Croatian grape called Crljenak (say that five times fast!). Primitivo’s Italian home is in Puglia and was introduced to America in the early 19th century taking the name Zinfandel. Primitivo translates roughly to “early one”, which is fitting since it happens to be one of the earliest ripening grapes at Stone Tree Vineyard.
